Is it a common phenomenon that when it rains heavily , ( or sometimes not even heavily )the television pictures are affected from the signal coming from the satelite dish ?

I haven't noticed that
I did lose all signal when the snow was really heavy but other than that its been ok

Our Freeview telly (I'm too poor for Sky) acts up when it's raining heavily or very windy.

When I had Sky I used to get that happen, yes.

Yep, in extreme rain I'll lose my picture til it abates.

Mind you, most of the actual programmes are a bit crap no matter what the weather.

Bazile -yes yes and yes! In the last three months I've had 3 engineers out because of 'pixelations' on the screen. The last one that came out told me it was because we live in an exposed position with no other houses in front of the dish to stop wind and rain. I wish now we'd stuck with BT Vision.

Snow is the worst - pretty well guarantee a loss of signal.

If you are losing it in anything other than torrential rain though, it might be worth getting the dish alignment checked.

What do the signal strength/quality look like (in your settings menu)?

It can happen, but as said check the dish for any overgrown trees nearby or checked for looseness and alignment.

Octavius - we have got a huge ' christmas tree ' shaped tree in our garden .
( no idea what type of tree it is )
