Disabling Items In Windows 7

I am trying to disable some start-up items on my new laptop, but please how do you know which ones to disable :o( I have Intel (3) Com listed three times,and I haven't a clue what it is, surely I don't need it three times? I have Norton online, but have a free trial of McAphee until July, also Launch Man? and clear.fi Movie? to name but a few.
Also how do I get Answerbank icon on my desktop please-because I'm certainly going to need it! -TIA rosy

To get an icon on your desktop, right click while on the page you want to add, then select "create short cut" and finally click yes when the box comes up asking if you want to create the short cut.

Excuse me for intervening,I have just done the same on reading how to do it,I clicked on create shortcut,is a symbol then supposed to appear somewhere?

Yes, it should be on your desktop screen.
Not sure why it isn't working Rosy, works fine for me when I follow that method.

If you wish to put a clickable site icon on your desktop, try this simple method.

1) Open your Profile Page in Answerbank. 2) Reduce size of 'on screen page', so there is some blank space around it. 3) Click and hold the small round icon at start point in the address bar. 4) Slide the held item into a blank area on your screen and release hold on mouse.......Bingo..all done and, if as I do, you refrain from logging out of AB when you exit the site, a click on your new desktop icon will take you straight to your Profile Page.

Oops-spelling mistake, I have McAfee which is a relief. Thank you for your advice methyl, I guess I will have to make my own mind up which to delete, if any-I just thought that too much stuff on start up slowed everything down-rosy

I think that most computers need a tidying-up when newly bought. It then becomes a matter to work-out what to clear out; taking care Not to remove anything which is vital to operating the computer (laptop/desktop).

If you were to list the 'start-up' items, I feel sure it would help folk on here to advise those programmes which are really unnecessary and could be removed.

I shall be away until this afternoon and, upon returning home, will see how this thread is going.

Good evening rosy,

I really don't think that you should be opening-up and altering things in System Config. You could do a lot of harm. I thought you were concerned about programmes in your 'Startup' Folder.

For instance...'Intel' is your computers Processor and no way would you want to interfere with that. However, when McAfee runs out, I suggest you replace it with Microsoft Security Essential (MSE) which is a free and simple download. In the meanwhile I would be inclined to leave things as they are and see how your Acer performs. I have faith in Acer machines.

Oh dear, thank you so much for your reply Al, you see I bought a book about windows 7 and it said 'disable unwanted start up items as they slow down the pc, so of course that is what I thought I was doing -following the instructions. Luckily I haven't disabled anything until I got replies from AB so that is o.k. and yes I will take your very helpful advice and see how I go with the laptop. I knew I could depend on Answer Bank-long may it reign, thank you again -rosy

You shouldn't have two anti virus programmes running at the same time, they cause conflicts.

You can take the tick out of Adobe Reader as well. It will start up as when you need it. Doesn't need to start with Windows.

If you don't use it, then you don't need it in your startup folder.

How are you accessing the startup folder?

Hi, I click start,then system configuration then start up to access. Thank you for the link, I don't think I will use that at all, I mostly mess about with pictures and not with music etc, so I will probably get rid of that.I have the Mcafee until July, it seems very good, but I will look at Norton and probably disable that if that is what you mean? The Norton in your Computer is Not an Anti Virus programme but an 'on-line' back-up for files photographs etc. Something to decide at a later date as to whether you really need it; along with 'Clear fi Movie-Cyber link corp'.

Thanks for awarding me 'Best Answer'. You can always alter it to someone else on next 'Start-up'... without any conflict between ABers on this tread.

Please post further if need be. You have a desktop AB icon for the purpose.

Check out Windows Service Information on blackviper dot com, it will give you an A to Z list of every service, what's dependent on it, and step by step configuration.

I've used his suggestions for years on every machine and Windows OS. Very Useful.

Boot time on this Lenovo Z570 this morning was 29 seconds.
