My (step) dad is on holidays and he rang this afternoon to say he has gotten engaged (to the lady he went with, not some stranger). I felt like something was on the cards but didn't think it would be marriage just yet.

Good on him!! :-))
Congratulations to him and her. xx
Looks like you'll be buying a new hat then, sherrardk !.

Very good news.
Are you happy about it Sher?
I hope you like her, good luck xx
A bit like when my widowed mother re-married, in her late seventies.

Suddenly my Mum had a different surname to me.

It felt weird.
Do you think he is rushing things Sherrardk ? You sound a tad pensive. Do you know the lady ?
Jeza, doesn't matter whether she's happy or not, her step-dad's happiness should come first.
Can't work out if you're happy or not ...... but if he is happy ......? Congrats to them!!
I should have added, in my Mum's case it has been brilliant for her and him.

I am very happy for her.

The lady is his next-door but one neighbour so I know who she is but I haven't seen her/spoken to her since I lived there (26 years ago). I am pleased for him but think it is going to feel weird to see him marry someone else. My (step) dad isn't even 60 yet so has lots of life left (hopefully). Don't think my half-brother is going to take it too well though (he thought the world of our mother). Oh well, see how it goes - could be some bad feeling in the offing though.
Sherr, the sad part of family life is there will always be some bad feeling from someone.

Why on earth some folk can't be happy defeats me.
good for him. I know when my BIL died, my neice and nephew were really pleased when my sister met someone else - he'll never replace their dad, but my sister doesn't have to be a nun for the rest of her days.

I think my (half) brother will find it really hard to deal with and my (half) sister might get arsey if my dad sells his house (and the implications it might have for her when he dies - ie she doesn't get what she thinks she should).

good evening sherrardk

i hope you will be comfortable and happy with your father's decision, and please pass on my congratulations to him
When my father remarried after my mums death my kid sister who was 30 at the time went mad - accused our stepmum of being a goldigger etcetc.

My dad was 60 at the time - I love my step mum and her kids, my dad is happy and as far as I'm concerned that is all that matters.

I am happy that he has someone to be with and to look after him - not being sexist, but after my mother died he managed to hospitalise himself with really bad food poisoning.
I hope they're very happy x
