Don't join the FB (Fools Brigade) in the first place ?

Bottom left corner where it says Chat click on the Options wheel and there is an option to have chat on or off. Turn it off.

The little cog in the bottom righ hand corner, the go to "Turn Chat off" then no one can see when you are online.
