I am using Microsoft Security Essentials and it is about 10% done when it started just over 2 hours ago i am using a FULL SCAN is this usual and is there a solution?

Depends on how big your HDD is and whether you might have requested a full scan to include any backup drives. My HDD is 1Tb and so is my backup drive.

Both are 3/4 full and the scan time is about 3hrs. Scan time will go up if your using the pc at the same time.
