My holiday present to myself is an ebook reader.

Can I ask A-bers for their personal recommendations, please?

Kindle or other thing? Pros and cons?

I'm likely just to be reading novels, but it will need to be able to store a good dozen or so since I can easily read a book in a day. I want it to be easy to download too and not cost a fortune.

I just don't know what is out there.....

I've just delivered 26 hours of continual training on these devices in the last 5 days so kinda spewing it out like a script. lol

kobo uses the ComfortLight technology that as i said, shines into the screen not into your eyes, it means a comfortable read, 7 font sizes, 24 font styles, you can adjust the size, weight, style of the font, adjust the margins, line spacing , it has a built in dictionary and you can annotate using the notebook under the extras setting

Barmaid, I have two Sony eReaders. One I bought brand new a few years ago and another I bought very cheaply on eBay recently - for a friend.

I like it because:
it has an SD card slot so can store thousands of books

it reads many formats so I am not limited to Amazon

I can download free books from my public libraries - you don't have to live in the county to be registered with a library. I am registered in 5 counties so can borrow 15 books a week (21 days is the maximum load period).

The battery lasts for weeks without recharging

Easy to read in very bright sunlight

I can make the text big or bigger

Easy to use

Doesn't have wifi but that is not a problem. I download books to my desktop or netbook and transfer them to the pc. Makes managing the eReader very easy

It's not colour but that suits me. It keeps the battery life and the page is easy on the eye, like reading a real book.

I have just looked on eBay and there are lots going cheeeeeeeep.

(Ahem, I am whispering this. It reads many formats including the popular series you can buy on CD from eBay, which don't have DRM so you can share them.)

I had a Sony ereader to start. I didn't want kindle as it was part of a monstrous conglomerate... Blah,blah,blah. It was a pain...had to charge and download via PC. PC died a few months ago...so I got a tablet. Best thing I ever did...can read books bought on googleplay via Google library,Aldiko-an ereader app I use for free and other downloads,and I also have a kindle app for everything I get via amazon. I'm in reading heaven. Oh...the tablet I got is a Google nexus 7. Love it

I have a Nexus 7 too, Pasta, but the battery life isn't good enough for holidays away. I don't want to be charging it every day or so.

True...that's the one major drawback with a tablet.

that;'s where the greyscale Kobos come into their own, the aura does 2 months reading on full charge, great for camping too as it has the light that will do 55 hours reading with the light

And I have a mains charger for my Sony. It also happens to charge my smartphone :)

Whilst I can't give you a description as brilliant as Dots, I will say my Kindle Touch is pretty spot on and does exactly what I need it to do :-)
Battery life is great, I very rarely have to charge it. The only thing negative I can find with it is I think some kind of back light (for night time reading) would be helpful. I think the new Kindle Fire has this feature though, although I doubt you would need it on holiday! :-)

no it doesn't it is HD and 25% faster than any other greyscale e-reader with intuitive touch screen technology, you can turn pages with a gloved hand it is that sensitive

I got myself one of the basic Nook readers they were doing at £29.99. Loads of free downloads and many more very cheap books.
Not too many features but it has wifi, the downloading is simple and the text is clear

Where do you get your books from, douglas? Are they a good price?

the back lights on every other e reader on the market use the 8 l.e.d. system which can spot if damaged or give hotspots, the kobo devices use a bottom light that shines up and into the screen and not out at you.
