how can i increase the volume on my pc?

the sound on my pc seems to have died ,i have tried increasing it using the volume button ,but that is set at maximum,there is some sound there but it is very low and very crackly,it never used to be like this

It could possibly be the Drivers ? if you go to Control Panel >system>hardware>device manager, you can highlight the relevant sound properties and right click it will pop up a troubleshooter box - may be worth giving this a go - you can also update driver - it could be perhaps that something has interfered with the driver ?

Check all cables and connections.  Try headphones instead of speakers, try new speakers...

Have you double-clicked on the speaker in the tray beside the clock? It'll pop up a mixer device and you should be able to see if any of the individual sound sources are turned down low or muted.
