Can anyone tell me how to get rid of desktop icons that can't be dragged to the recycle bin? Thanks.

Click the Desktop tab, then click Customise Desktop at the bottom. This'll give you a page that lets you remove the My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer icons.

If you're trying to remove something else and it won't go, it might be virus/trojan related, and you're advised to follow the usual antivirus / spyware removal procedures.

that sort of thing should be readily deleted.
if it was other types, such as my documents icon or the recycle bin itself etc, then i was going to suggest ralph's very suggestions.
tweakUI (for XP especially) does all manner of wonders. it should be included in the box (as well as the ClearType wizard).
