So, yes, if you want 5000 songs on your iPod, you'll have to have 5000 songs on your computer, although you don't necessarily have to have 5000 songs on either your iPod or iTunes library.
You could also keep the mp3 file size down by copying them from CD at a lower quality.

My first reaction would be to tell you NOT to buy one. Mine has done nothing but crash, and now it's dead as a dodo and is only 8 months old. Even my partner's crashes often and gets upset when he's not using it.
However, to answer your question, You don't have to keep all the songs on your computer. Say you were loading up all your CDs, you could load up some, copy them to your iPod, take them off your PC then copy some more. However, when you set up the iPod for the first time you have to uncheck the button that says to automatically synchronise. Auto sync means that whenever you plug in your iPod to the PC, the content of iTUnes and iPod are matched. Do it manually instead, then you can keep everything on your iPod and not on your PC.
Still check out some other MP3 players (as opposed to MP4 which is the format that iPod uses, as they're probably more stable.

I have an ipod mini but im not very technical so I hope I get this right!!! Obviously you have to get the files onto your computer at some point in order to get them onto your ipod, but once theyve been uploaded onto your ipod you can delete them off of your computer. You just need to make sure that you have your settings in itunes adjusted so that you manually control what goes on / comes off your ipod, otherwise anything you delete out of your itunes will automatically be deleted off of your ipod next time you connect them. I hope that makes sense!!!
just get an iPod. they are brilliant things, and i've never had any problem with mine (like 20 months old now).
however, only get one if you have room for one. if you don't have room for the music you want to store on your iPod on your computer, then you'll need to get a new hard drive. if your computer runs windows 2000, windows XP or mac OSX, then your hard drive should be large enough to fit a lot of songs onto it. how much space do you have left on your hard drive, how large is it in total, and how much music do you have on there already?
