IPads are easier to use and work better because Apple make the hardware and the operating software.
Do not buy an iPad now. A new one is due out in a few weeks which will be better. All new iPads come with Apple's productivity software free*
* Pages - a Word like program
Numbers - a spreadsheet program
iPhoto - for managing your photographs
iMovie - for editing upur videos
Keynote - for making Powerpoint like presentations.

Rocky. There may be some confusion about the mans iPad. The latest one is the iPad 4 (4th Generation). You can buy that in wifi only and can use theCloud for free data in most pubs. Only EE have a 4G network in the UK at the moment O2s has been delayed. If the man has a cellular option iPad he would need to sign a contract and will ve billed according to his plan and use. If he claims he isn't, then I suspect he has the wifi only model.
The Amazon Fire works on a modified version of Android. Instead of buying from Google's 'Play' store for books and music, it deaults to the Amazon Store.

I have an ipad2 3G 16Gb and I love it. Have had it for almost 2 years. Not cheap and lots of comments are you can get cheaper tablets. When I bought it I never knew how much I would use it and what I would use it for. Music, Photos, WP, surfing the net, I run my own business all pros for me and I now only use my laptop for updates. The only con for me is that you still need a laptop to be able to update your ipad. For £500 I personally think it was worth every penny the only thing I did wrong was buy the smallest memory as I did to realise the usage it would get.

You do not need another computer to update the iPad's software. It is entirely stand alone. If you lose an app or music you can atically restore it in iTunes on the pad. You get 5GB of free cloud space so you can back up your photos there.

A lot may depend on what smartphone you have (if you have one).
If you already have an Android smartphone (Samsung Galaxy, HTC one and loads of others) then best to go for an Android tablet (Google Nexus, Samsung Galaxy etc)
But if you have an iphone then go for an ipad.
Smartphones and tablets work together and it is best to have the same combination of smartphone and tablet.
Saves learning new technologies also if your tablet and smartphone are based on the same technology.

I love my Nexus 7 - I do everything that Sycamore has listed and more.
I use mine as a Satnav - much better than my top of the range TomTom.
It updates without a pc.
It syncs with my pc.
The screen is fab.
Highly recommended by the computer mags.
I watch live tv on it, and catch up tv.
I can set my Tivo to record from anywhere with it.
I listen to the radio.
It syncs with my NAS hard drive and dropbox.
I download free ebooks from my library on to it and use it as an eReader.
Great apps from the Play store.
Very easy to use.
£160.
