Help Monitor Very Pale!

My old desktop has become very pale and impossible to read. But when I restart it, the writing is clear as day, and I start in safe mode, nothing happens. Any ideas please. It did do this last year, and then started OK after a while, but I have no idea what do do, I left it on all night but still nothing. Windows XP.

Obviously, you've checked the leads and power supply. Is it actually a monitor or a lcd/led display? Any chance of trying another display?

Not sure what you mean by 'nothing happens' in safe mode. Still the same pale display or no display at all?

leads etc all OK, in safe mode there is just a little hyphen in the corner flashing and nothing happening. Buyt when I press reboot, all the writing comes up very clear, but no idea what to press, I think the monitor is OK. Windows appears but very faintly and nothing happens.
