Most programs have an "open at startup" option hidden somewhere within their options menu.

If you can't find such an option for the programs, try the following:

Go to the Start menu, click on Run, and type in msconfig . Click on the far right tab at the top, entitled Startup.
From there, you can uncheck any of the things that you don't want to open when your computer starts up.
Also, defrag your hard-drive fairly regularly. Don't let your temporary internet files build up too much, and install Spybot Search and Destroy, Spywareblaster and Sygate Firewall if you haven't got one. They are all free.

doing what both posts above recommended will deffinately help your PC. But also download and install a program called AdAware. This will scan you PC and locate any 'malware' and 'spyware' etc. that can also slow a PC down.
