hard drive compatibility

could some kind person please tell me whether this hard drive

 would work ok with this motherboard. (its quite old!)

its the connection im not sure about , so if its not ,what do i need to be looking at when buying a new hard drive?

mobo says it supports ATA-33, ATA-66, and IDE.

that HDD is ATA-100. not sure if it's compatible or not... I think the HDD would run though, but only at ATA-66. not sure though.. anyone else?

Yep - fo3nix has the right answer.

All the ATA specs are backward compatible. So if it's an ATA100 drive but your motherboard can only support ATA66 then the drive will run at that. It should only affect the speed of data transfer to/from the new drive.

You may also need to change a setting in BIOS but most drives self-detect OK when installed.

I do not wish to complicate the issue but it may be relevant that the mobo was produced in 1997.

Back in the 'good old days' the BIOS couldn't handle drives larger than 33.8GB and further back still the limits were 8.4GB, 4.2GB and 2.1GB.

If you already have a drive larger than 33.8GB then you will have no problem with adding the new 80GB disk.
If not, you may well need to flash your BIOS with an upgrade.

I tried to have a look at the latest BIOS available - ver. A10 but was somewhat surprised that you have to pay for it !!!
