Can I buy any make of phone, or must it be one that is compatible to O2 and therefore only to my O2 simcard? do I have to change my phone number?

You can buy any phone you like that is not "locked" to a particular company.

You should be able to take the sim out your current phone and put it in the new phone and keep your number.
If you go into your nearest O2 shop, you'll find dozens of models you can choose from, and keep your own SIM and number.
I've just bought a phone from Carphone Warehouse. They are not "locked" into anyone. My new phone takes a mini simcard and they even cut my current simcard down for me so it would fit.
I walked out of the shop with my new phone and old telephone number working perfectly.

Thanks so much for your advice, everyone. Much appreciated, you've been very helpful. Probably won't buy the phone until Xmas, but will be looking around for something between now and then, before I finally take the plunge! Appreciate your help. Chox.
Re: Blackberry...possibly best avoided. Not in a "good place" currently...maybe not around much longer?
