Simple Mobile Phone

Several years ago I bought an 02 jet mobile phone but it was so complicated I've never really bothered with it. It has a 200+ page instruction book and no doubt will do many wonderful things, but I'm thinking of giving it away and looking for something simple, just for making and receiving calls, and possibly sending and receiving email messages. Can anyone suggest a basic simple phone please? Presumably I would have to register with a service provider to operate it? Many thanks.
