I bought an expensive (to me) laser printer exactly three years ago. It has had light use and now I'm told the drum is causing the recent poor results - vertical stripes on the colour sections of a document or photo.

Is it reasonable for a drum to wear out this fast? I have only used the original start-off cartridges plus almost through one replacement set. Do I have any rights in this matter - the guarantee was only for one year.? I've just bought a replacement set of cartridges, too, at great expense.

With some exceptions, a retailer (not the manufacturer) is responsible for correcting anything that goes wrong with an item due to an inherent fault for a period of 6 years after the purchase of an item. An 'inherent fault' is one which was there at the time of purchase, such as poor manufacturing standards or the use of sub-standard components). However after 6 months from the date of purchase there's no automatic assumption that a problem must have occurred due to an inherent fault; it's up to the customer to prove it (or, at least, to show that it's the most likely cause based upon the balance of probabilities).

So your legal rights are against the retailer, not the manufacturer, but you might struggle to show that the problem has come about through an inherent fault.. In the first instance, it might be worth contacting Samsung UK to see whether they're prepared to assist you:

Thanks for the explanation Buenchico. I have contacted Samsung once and they wanted to send some subcontractor out at a cost of over a £100 just for the callout, with a further bill to come should it prove repairable. It was a local repairman (£30.00 callout) who said it was the drum, so I suppose I could contact them again. Am I expecting too much or do others think three years of light use is not very long for what is supposed to be a machine suitable for an office environment?
