kept on getting a pop up box Firefox updates to install a newer version.
opening out the computer this morning, and it started loading, can it do that, i didn't click on and say install, as i have done that once before and it really messed things up. But changes have been made, going on some of the layout and type face, so not sure what else it's done.

Click Help > About Firefox to check which version you're currently using. (The latest is 27.0.1). I've not noticed any changes in layout or typeface that have come about through recent updates.

its somewhat different, i opened out the computer, and there was this little box saying installing firefox, with that green light thingy going back and forward. I hadn't clicked on anything at all to make it install the newer version. I worry because the last time i installed a newer version it messed up big time.
Are you sure that you've got the setting you require regarding updates? (See above for how to check). If you've got automatic updates enabled then any major change to the program will be downloaded without you noticing it and then installed the next time that you start your computer (which appears to be what you've described).
