My boss's young son uses Publisher at school and wants it on his laptop at home too. I know he doesn't have Microsoft Office and I know Publisher isn't cheap. Boss is asking me for advice and I simply don't know. Maybe I should just tell him to get Office too!
Really can't follow you. You're complaining about the price of a single application and are intending to recommend purchasing an entire suite instead?

No, what I don't want is to say yes go ahead and buy Publisher but for the little lad not to be able to use it if he needs to have Office too

Will MS Publisher work with Open Office ?
If it's for school work he's likely to need other programs such as word processing, spreadsheet and presentation as time passes, so a suite might be better value. Also, if a school in the UK, they may have licences for home use of their software.
