Several keys on my laptop now need a good thump before they 'print'. The letters affected are randomly spaced. Is there a simple reason and home remedy?

I don't think they will Prudie. You can always cover the tube with a pair of tight similar?

The might be a build-up of dust and general gunk under the keys, so it's worth trying to clean the laptop's keyboard. This can be done at home with some care, but depends a bit on the make and model.
sounds like there could be muck under them,i tend to eat crisps etc while using mine lol and you would be suprised how many crumbs end up under the keys.can you remove them and clean underneath to see if that helps.

It's a Dell, so should I ping them off and have a good brush? I'm concerned I would't get them to go back on properly
Take a pic first, then ping away. I often ping mine off.
I cleaned my MacBook keyboard with a multipurpose cleaning wipe. It looked great. Alas the keyboard seized up and it cost me £200 to get it up and running again. So don't do that!!
ps, you can ping off 3 at a time with a butter knife :)

This sounds encouraging, seems like you all ping!
Bit basic I know but I tip it upside down and give it a thorough shaking. Then get the soft nozzle attachment on the vacuum and give it a blast. It's worked so far.
Is it easy this pinging? I could do with pinging as I think I have the same problem, really annoying it is!!
you can ping them off but they are fiddly to get back on lol,i use a soft toothbrush to clean round mine and if they still stick i ping them :)
I might go with Captain 2s method queen, knowing me they'll not go back on!
... & your toothbrush suggestion queen!
... or get a computer Hoover, we've got one - I get toast in my keyboard :-)

No no - the computer hoover is a weeny thing - it's a mini vacuum cleaner with tinsy brushes - not like this one, but similar http://www.amazon.co.uk/Evolve-PP2051-Computer-Vacuum/dp/B000ASB2BI
