quizman55, Hitman seems to be the best virus removal programme, when it comes to removing webssearches, but had problems trying to download it for free, after going through the downloading process, i then got a pop up window telling me there was an error. any suggestions?
Question Author
this was what was in the pop up...(when trying to donload hitman)
An error occurred during activation (Error code: 20) software firewall on your computer may be blocking the application "hitmanpro.exe.". Update your firewall rules to rely on this application (full network access) has not been activated

seems like i ´ve got to do a firefox restore every time i log on, because it always comes back when i log on(websseearches)
Version of Windows your running and what 'firewall' are you using?
Pressed submit too early.
Did you do the scan with Malwarebytes free? Would suggest you try it again, but with your pc in 'safe mode' and with 'system restore' switched off.
Websearch is a browser hijacker. You may remove it this way

Open Mozilla Firefox, Click on Tools menu (If tools menu doesn’t appear then press “F10″ key once to active the menu bar) then go to Options, after that a configuration page will be opened, then click on General tab and then look on the very first section named as Startup. Under Startup you will see a HOME PAGE Edit Box, under this edit box you will see www.Websearch.Search, please replace it with www.google.com, then click on apply and close.
Restart Firefox Browser

Good luck

sir prize, i went to mozilla firefox, and then to options, then to general tab, then to start up, found the homepage, found and empty edit box, but no words webssearches there, just an empty box, so i typed www.google.com and pressed ok. but still no difference
Use the free version of Malwarebytes as suggested.

Does it find it?

I always recommend that when you've cleaned with Malwarebytes, turn off System Restore before restarting. Some nasties will reinstall themselves from System Restore.

After the restart scan again. Only when the scan comes back clean the turn on System Restore.

Question Author
malwarebytes is great, but it cant find webssearches
system restore, done this 5 times now, and the bu55ger still there.
will try your method tuvok
Anything listed in Addons or Plugins in Firefox/Tools?
Question Author
nothing s.alice
As I said earlier websearches is a browser hijacker. It is related to the search.conduit 'family'. You need to search your Add/remove programs in Control Panel for anything resembling conduit.

Then you need to again check your Firefox addons/plug ins for anything resembling conduit as.

Did you see SlackAlice's comment at 17:38 on Thursday? It would be helpful.

Question Author
sir prize, i´m running windows 7/32bit, firewall, i haven´t a clue, could you tell me how to find out please.
piggynose. Open Firefox. Click on Tools then in the drop down menu click on Add-ons

Then click on Extensions to see if there is something relating to Websearch or Conduit. If so disable. This won't remove the 'nasty' but at least it will stop if from working.
Question Author
sir prize, did as you said, and when i clicked on extensions, all i got was the following...Avast! online security, a six digit number, (disabled) then a link to more, plus a chance to press enable.
Interesting. What Antivirus are you using?
Question Author
avast & malwarebytes
>>>malwarebytes is great, but it cant find webssearches

Have you tried running it in Safe Mode?

>>>firewall, i haven´t a clue, could you tell me how to find out please.

By default, Windows 7 own firewall should be running on your computer. Here's how to turn it off and back on again:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/turn-windows-firewall-on-off#turn-windows-firewall-on-off=windows-7

However if you've installed a full security suite, such as Norton or the paid-for version of Avast, (rather than just a standalone anti-virus program) that software will have probably disabled the Windows firewall and substituted its own. You'd need to go into the settings for that security suite to disable/enable the new firewall.
To check your firewall, click Windows button and type 'firewall' into the search box. A few options in the search box should then appear under control panel, click on Windows firewall. It should then indicate if Windows firewall is on or if you are using a third party firewall.

When you tried the download of HitmanPro did you opt for the 32bit version?
