Getting Rid Of Land Line - Pros's And Cons?

I'm wondering why I need a land line any more. Has anyone else got rid, and does anyone have any views on disadvantages, of using mobiles only?
I get my broadband through a separate fibreoptic line, so the phone line isn't needed for that. At the moment my landline seems to exist to keep anonymous callers in a job.

I haven't had a landline for about ten years. Partly because my neighbour and her daughters used it more than i did. It's just an extra unnecessary expense. And you get sales calls!

Not had one for years, either. I have a Skype Out number so people can phone me on that at the same rate as phoning a normal land line if they don't want to call my mobile.

Big advantage to Skype - when I'm away from home I get the calls just the same on my laptop.

Don't internet users need a land line? I'm with Virgin Media and paying for a line I never use.

If you get your internet via the fibre optic cable and not the old BT line you don't need a phone line, sandy.

Virgin will charge you more for your broadband if you don't have the phone but there is still a saving

If I was in your situation, I would knock the LL on the head. Because of continuous abusive and nuisance calls, my LL has been "off the hook" for the last year. I can't do without it altogether, as I need the 'net access. If I want to make a long distance call at weekends, then I use it but take it off the hook straight after. But everybody that needs to know, knows that they have to email me, text me, or call my Mobile if they want to contact me. I have an iphone, so all of the above is pretty instantaneous.

The Pros are it'll save you loads of money. I got rid of my landline about ten years ago because I actually found it much cheaper to get a mobile on contract from 3 and a broadband only deal from Virgin Media (which was owned by NTL back then). Not sure why Sandy got a landline off them if he doesn't need one.


The Cons are some credit card/loan companies require you to have a landline. Again I'm not sure why because most people I know, no longer have a landline. The only disadvantage of having a mobile is people can reach you at any time (even the ones you're trying to avoid!) so you can't use the excuse that you were out when they rung you. But in all honesty, I can't say I've missed my landline in any way whatsoever.

I'll get in touch with Virgin Media later today. I've been paying for that line for years. I suppose I assumed that internet, TV, and phone all came together in a bundle.

Hold on, Sandy, so you have the TV as well off VM? In that case it might be different. My TV service is with Sky, the only thing I have from VM is the fibre optic broadband service, nothing else.

I have tv as well and no problem without a landline

Personally, I'd never have a landline off any company while they charge those extortionate monthly line rental fees.

The big disadvantage is you have to use a mobile, holding up some slim wafer to your ear and trying not to drop it. Then there is the risk of words dropping out every now and again. Mobiles are for one is stuck without a real phoned to use, or as a pager replacement.

The only other disadvantage of using a mobile at present is that dialling so-called Freephone numbers (0800) from a mobile isn't actually free and can in fact, prove quite expensive. Apparently, however, as from 26th June 2015, Ofcom have brought in a rule that all numbers starting with 08 will be free whether dialled from a landline or a mobile.

The vast majority of people in the UK gave no choice about whether to have a land line or not, if they need internet access as well, and the main telephone companies are aware of that and charge accordingly.

We still have our landline and we both have mobiles. We get nuisance sales calls on both.

Actually, I am now starting to get nuisance calls on my Mobile as well. These only started a few weeks ago, so I presume somebody has sold on a list of Mobiles numbers and IDs, as I am always addressed by name. If this continues I might have to consider changing my Mobile number, which will be a complete pain in the ar*e !
