Yes - USB is "backwards compatible".  You can put a USB1 device into a USB2 port, and it will operate correctly at USB1 speed.  Likewise you can put a USB2 device into a USB1 port, and it will work, still at USB1 speed of course.  Depending on what you are using, your system may even warn you that the device would work faster if you plugged it into a USB2 port.
