If you move the mouse pointer to the very top of the screen does it change to a hand? If so click and drag down to the bottom of the screen to close the app. You could also try hitting the Windows key.

Bibblebub I have tried this but does not work, no hand and if I hit the Windows key it does not close the photos page. I had to close down and restart.
How are you downloading the photos from the camera? If it is a program, especially one that came with the camera, which one?

I just plug in my USB and in to my camera ! It loads directly.
When doing the downloads, is there anything on screen near the top to indicate what program is being used? You could try Ctrl-Alt-Del - that should take you out to a system menu that includes Task Manager which, when selected, would get you back to the desktop and can see what programs are running.

Does your computer have a slot for SD cards? If so then you can access the photos on the card just as you would any files on a memory stick. That has always been my preferred means of transferring pics.

Thankyou for your help, will try these things.
I only have my own PC on which I can play around with things and so quickly run out of options to try. After that I have to rely on internet searching and I think that I've reached that point with your problem.
Point the curser to the very top left of the screen and right click 'close'
Top left corner, that is.
I too am having trouble with Windows 8, I click the Desktop icon and use it as Windows 7.

I am assured that if you have a touch screen laptop then W8 works well, I haven't and it doesn't!
I have a touchscreen and it`s still a pain in the @rse!
I am far from knowledgeable on W8 and am now confused with the fact that you have awarded bibblebub 'Best Answer' after telling him that his suggestion failed to resolve your problem.

Please post again and let us all know what is the present position in matters.

Hans.
