We have just had a little power cut.I now dont get any sound e.g 'Welcome To AOL' etc.

We have been trying to listen to music and watch a DVD - nothing.

Now I know there is a little icon for volume on bottom R hand side for volume and I have checked there is no tick in the mute box.I have also checked it is not on mute for music. The speaker is OK..What next please. Thanks

Just got it - plug in wrong hole on computer!!!
The power cut caused it.  Often when we lose power unexpectedly I find that various things "go wrong" with my computer. (Different every time it seems).  If it happens on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday then my speaker lead gets put in the wrong socket.  Any other day and the modem lead gets unplugged from the socket on the wall.  I am using Windows XP and have read the XP for Dummies books but this doesn't seem to be a topic that is covered at that level.
