For the past 2 days I have been unable to get either the internet or e-mails on my laptop. I have no problem getting them on my desktop. I keep getting the 'this page cannot be displayed'. Windows have not found anything wrong. I have tried pulling the plug to the modem and also pressing the restart button on the modem.
In 'idiots guide' terms can someone please help me?

What ISP are you using? And are you connecting wirelessly or through a cable?

My ISP is BT and I am connected through a cable but my laptop is wireless.
I should have said I disconnected the hub and not the modem! Senior moment!
Have you got the wireless on your laptop turned on?

Ummmm
Not sure how I check. I do have the small icon to show if I am connected and it appears normal, but I know nothing about computers
Mine is the f12 button. A little light comes on.

Thanks I'll go and try it - Ive got Windows 8.1.
What version of Windows are you using?
Answer the question before it's asked. That's good that is.

Have a look here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/cant-find-wireless-network#1TC=windows-8
See 'Connecting to a Network' here to see if you're actually connected to your hub:

If you're not, but your laptop can 'see' the hub, try connecting to it.

If you're not connected and your laptop can't even see the hub then either:
a) the option to hide its SSID has been enabled (which would seem unlikely as you're clearly not a computer expert) ; or
b) the wireless signal isn't being broadcast by the hub (which suggests that it's either turned off or there's a fault with the hub).

If your laptop is connected to the wifi signal from the hub (but possibly showing 'No internet access') and you definitely can't get online, you need to reset your laptop's TCP/IP stack:
Click the Search icon on the Charms bar and type 'Command Prompt' in the search box
Right click the search result and choose to Run as administrator
Type the command NETSH INT IP RESET C:\RESTLOG.TXT and press the Enter key
I'm intrigued to know. Did you get it sorted?

I am still struggling. My laptop says that WiFi is on and connected to my BT Homehub

Thank you all
Buenchico I reset the TCP/IP as suggested and I'm back in business, so thanks for that. Hopefully it won't affect anything else
