Slow Broadband
23 Answers
I have BT Broadband. Lately, I have noticed it is very slow. I have done an online speed check and discover (via the uSwitch checker) that my downland speed is 0.2mbs and upload 0.6mbs. I am less than half a mile from my phone exchange. Am I being ripped off?

The 'A' in 'ADSL' stands for 'Asymmetric', which means that your connection to the internet is deliberately configured to ensure that the download speed is significantly greater than the upload one. (I generally get around 10Mbps download and 1Mbps upload).
Irrespective of whether you've got a really good connection (because you're next to the exchange) or a lousy one (because you're as far away as it's possible to provide a broadband service) the download speed should always be far bigger than the upload speed. So there seems to be a line fault which needs to be rectified.

Before contacting BT I would suggest that you test your Broadband speeds with BT's official line tester. It stands to reason that BT may Not accept what you have from the uSwitch checker. If possible you should check from your BT 'in-box' which is the first telephone socket inside your property. :-
