Have successfully removed AVG anti virus and installed the above. Have also ran the malwayre thinmabob. But my patience is being tried in that the system is so slow either in typing this up or going from site to site.
Anything more I can do - what is causing this slowness. Thanks

Broadband speeds given by the OP would indicate that there is a slowness. Not in the Computer or Browser, but in the Broadband connection. Perhaps an approach should be made to the Internet Service Provider. It would be interesting to know who is the ISP.

I think there are three issues here.
1) Insufficient Memory
2) Too many programs running on startup.
3) Slow internet connection.
As far as I am aware Windows copes quite well with a 'scruffy' registry and I would leave a registry edit to the very last thing. Yes, I am aware that ccleaner has a good reputation and have used it myself, but only to delete items one at a time after verifying it was really something I didn't need. Not give it 'Carte Blanche' to 'fix all'.

Until we hear something further from jennyjoan, I don't think we can advise any further. However, although Microsoft has withdrawn support for XP, the Operating System will still continue to function quite safely and satisfactorily with a good Anti Virus Protection Programme; such as Avast, which jenny has installed.

Type Your Answer Here...Hi All - thanks for your replies - ran malware thingmajigand I had 4,074 viruses - PC Register comes up to clean the computer but then they are looking for money - still am very slow - going from one site to another was 5 minutes- would I be needing a new computer etc. thanks again.
JJ, did your pc come with a 'system restore' disk? If so, now is the time to use it. It will restore the pc to how it was when you bought it - it will get rid of all your files and any additional programs you've installed, but if you feel your only other option is to buy a new computer, then you've lost nothing by having a go.
