Have successfully removed AVG anti virus and installed the above. Have also ran the malwayre thinmabob. But my patience is being tried in that the system is so slow either in typing this up or going from site to site.

Anything more I can do - what is causing this slowness. Thanks

i have cc cleaner pro wouldn't be without it never had a problem ever
The OP would like to speed up a computer. Using CCleaner in its default mode can actually slow it down.

Broadband speeds given by the OP would indicate that there is a slowness. Not in the Computer or Browser, but in the Broadband connection. Perhaps an approach should be made to the Internet Service Provider. It would be interesting to know who is the ISP.

I think there are three issues here.

1) Insufficient Memory

2) Too many programs running on startup.

3) Slow internet connection.

As far as I am aware Windows copes quite well with a 'scruffy' registry and I would leave a registry edit to the very last thing. Yes, I am aware that ccleaner has a good reputation and have used it myself, but only to delete items one at a time after verifying it was really something I didn't need. Not give it 'Carte Blanche' to 'fix all'.
I wonder if the OP is with TalkTalk? I had that problem and TT sent me a new router, problem solved.

You're getting quite technical, guys - jj's already said she's not as much up to speed as you are on the tech side.....
Try giving it a defrag, I use this ( free version ) it may help to speed your computer up.

Blind !.
Just tried my connection. ping - 32ms, download speed - 8.01mbps, upload speed 0.6mbps. So yours might seem a little slow, you may want to consider a faster provider, but they don't seem way out to me.

The memory/free disk info might prove useful. You need as much as possible of both.

Have you downloaded and installed Malware Bytes free and run a quick scan I seem to think you have a malware infection on your computer. Given you are still using Windows XP this will probably a regular occurrence since support is now stopped.
Until we hear something further from jennyjoan, I don't think we can advise any further. However, although Microsoft has withdrawn support for XP, the Operating System will still continue to function quite safely and satisfactorily with a good Anti Virus Protection Programme; such as Avast, which jenny has installed.

I meant to say it is Internet explorer would be the browser - God I don't really know what I am doing .
JJ, did your pc come with a 'system restore' disk? If so, now is the time to use it. It will restore the pc to how it was when you bought it - it will get rid of all your files and any additional programs you've installed, but if you feel your only other option is to buy a new computer, then you've lost nothing by having a go.
4,074 viruses???
Get yourself some real protection.
If you are not "computer savvy" it may well be worth buying one of the available "Anti virus" programs.
Most "freebies" on offer are good but you really need to know how to configure them and how to use them to get the protection required.
