Syncing Iphone 3

I have an iPhone 3gs that I only use for music now, I'm trying to sync it to my computer to put more songs on it, however it doesn't seem to recognise it, when the usb is connected it will charge so there's no problem with that. I'm using windows 8, I've also checked in the services and applications and the apple service is running, which I have turned off and installed again, any thoughts would be welcome.
