Ive just bought a new Sony Vaio laptop running window 8. I am being plagued by advertising pop ups that appear from nowhere.
Is there a no cost way can I get rid of this intrusion?

That reads as if you've contracted some malware. Download, install and run the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware: https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/ (When installing, take care to deselect the option to install a free trial of the 'Premium' version).

My answer above applies to Firefox as well as Chrome (and, indeed, to any other browser).

Do beware that some site ads now think it absolutely hilarious to pop up a video over what you are trying to look at / read if your mouse cursor has happened to just come to rest over it for a while. IMO the perpetrators need stringing up to teach the rest a lesson, but no, that would be too good for them.
