Virtual Memory Low

My desktop hasn't been working so well in the last couple of weeks. I frequently get a pop-up balloon in the bottom right corner to say that my virtual memory is low and that Windows is enlarging it, and that during this process certain applications may be denied. Annoyingly nothing ever seems to improve. Is there anything I can be doing? Please bear in mind I am very non-technical. Many thanks.

You use more virtual memory when you have insufficient real memory to keep all the applications/programs you are running, in memory.

Try finding out what you don't need to run, or what is running and you were unaware of. Task Manager helps. And consider adding memory to your computer up to the max it can take.

Thanks. I followed a link, followed the instructions - and did it! Happy days.
Explicitly increasing the size of the hard drive to use as virtual memory is fine, but you should be sure you know why Windows was automatically increasing it on a regular basis for you, or you may find you have to increase it yourself next time.
