Printing 4MP pictures

What's the biggest dimension that photos of 4MP (2304x1728) should be printed in order to have a GOOD (not reasonable) quality?

It depends on your printer. At work I can print up to A1 in excellent quality from a 4m image. This is only limited by the size of the printer. For home use, if you want BIG then try uploading your photo to http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/

You can also download the program for free if you prefer. Mess around with settings and use a high DPI. See if that's any good

I don't want to print it at home, but in a photo lab. I wanted a 50x75cm (20x30in) but I don't know if the resolution is enough..

At 20X30" most people are not going to look at it close up so as long as colour and tone are good, sharpness technically won't matter. Use this formula as a rough guide to achieving an excellent print. You can then get some idea of the quality you'd get - Long print dimension in inches = 4 x (square root of megapixels)

The minimum camera resolution to give a photolab print sized 20"x30" of an 'OK' quality is 6 megapixel.

The largest prints from a 4MP camera equate to

• 11x14 = OK
•   8x10 = Good
•    5x7  = Best

To expand a little on what kempie has advised - this "best" figure corresponds roughly to 300 dpi.  Good quality "glossy" magazines are usually printed on printers with screen resolutions of around 133 lines per inch.  The rule of thumb is to use an image which is roughly twice the screen resolution of the printer (i.e. 266 for a 133 lpi printer - roughly 300).  Any more than 2.5 times is a complete waste of data, increasing file sizes with no advantage.

I've just printed a picture (2304x1728) at 25x38cm (aprox 10x15in) and it came reaaally good, I could say excellent. When I'm printing a bigger one (50x75cm or slightly smaller) I'll let u know how it turned out
