Can anyone tell me why seemingly random phrases get highlighted in blue and underlined in emails on my iPad?

Are you using the Mail app or another app or is it webmail?

I think if there is a link on your ipad it will underline in blue. If you say for example ' come and have dinner tonight after work' and the word tonight is underlined. If you then tap the word tonight it will take you to the calendar where you can add the event. I think you have to switch something off in settings to stop this. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks Sycamore, I do follow you and I think you might be right as it also happens with telephone numbers I'll have a look and see if I'm invited to save the number to contacts or some such thing.

If you go into settings, general then down the left hand side is all the apps. Tap mail, contacts, calendar. There are things there that you can turn on or off. These then Link with other apps ie Mail with contacts or mail with calendar. I think it is quite useful.

Another bit of the ipad I find useful is the keyboard shortcut. Go to settings, general, right hand side towards the bottom is keyboard, tap and at the bottom is Add Shortcut. I use this for words or phrases that are typed regularly such as my email address. I only type the 1 st three letters of my email & then it does the rest. Useful

It's a grammar checker, be sure you have the correct English setting as there's many different types of English, American, Australian the list goes on red is spelling blue is grammar.
