Recently when I switch on my computer this message appears:

Metacafe package is currently unavailable for automatic downloading would you like to download it directly? Yes or No.

What is Metacafe and should I download it directly so as to get rid of the annoying message every time I switch on my computer?

It sounds like AOG has already installed something which is trying to install Metacafe. Have you installed any new software recently AOG which may (or may not) have had any options during install which you didn't untick to prevent Metacafe installing itself.
And as per Boxtops, no you shouldn't just install it to get rid of the message, that way viruses and corruption lie!

Metacafe is a large video network see http://www.metacafe.com/ Cannot see any problem in d/loading it AOG.You can always remove it later.

In case the message actually has nothing to do with Metacafe anyway, and is simply trying to trick you into downloading something really nasty, do a scan with the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and 'quarantine' anything nasty found:
