Our microwave oven has been making a creaking sound for some time now , when not in use , but when the electricity is on - i.e. plugged in . ( well that's when we hear it - it may well be creaking also when in use , but obviously we cant hear it then )

We are a bit concerned as to whether it's faulty or not .

Is there any devices that we could purchase to test to see if it's leaking microwaves

For sure, I've seen advertised screwdriver looking things that light up if they detect microwaves. I'd suspect a web search might find them.

But I'd doubt much escapes unless it comes on with the door open. Put the neighbour's cat nearby and see if it's done to a turn after a few minutes. Don't forget the roast potatoes.
Time for a new one I would sy. I had a near disaster with one recently. Heard a crack - then acrid smoke appeared. Luckily I was still in the kitchen at the time and able to switch it of at the plug otherwise it would have been a disaster.
I have read (and also tried out) a test to see if the microwave is still sealed by placing your mobile phone inside and close the door (obviously do not switch the microwave on!), then dial your phone and if the microwave is working correctly the signal will be blocked and the phone will not ring. Hope you can understand this.
I would be more worried about a short circuit than a microwave leak. Are you sure the noise isn't coming from the plug? A broken wire or poor contact in the plug can make buzzing noises followed eventually by failure.
