Hi all,
Excuse me for being a bit thick, but I've seen a few people on buses, trains with these things. Amazon are selling a cheapo one for £49.
I'm not sure exactly what they are. Do you download books onto them and read them? How much do the downloads cost? For example, I like Agatha Christie. Does it cost to download the Poirot books. What about bokks about, say football. Or Chess?
Thanks all in advance

You can find a load of free downloads, but the rest you'll have to pay for. I'm a bookworm, so I received one as a prezzie a few years ago. I've used it a handful of times. I do not enjoy reading a book on a kindle, but I do like some of the educational literature I download (languages, etc). Reading a book on a handheld device does not give me the same fulfilment as flicking through real paper pages.
Play around with one first, or ask to borrow someones for a few days. 49 quid is cheap, but a waste if you find you will not use it.

PS: If you search the 'Kindle Store' section (rather than 'Books') you'll [obviously] be looking only at books which are published in Kindle format. e.g. here:

Getting a kindle got me back into reading. I think its the best gadget I've ever bought. Its smaller than most books, yet I've currently got several hundred on mine...and I can take them any where.
There are lots of sites that offer free books including AC. If you have a computer, you can download a kindle reading app...this will give you an idea of how kindle works, and its free.

What you are looking at is the kindle reader purely for downloading and reading books, I have the Kindle Fire HD which is a tablet in the true sense akin to an ipad on which you can mail, surf net download apps and books from AMAZON store, watch tv download music, photos etc etc etc..I would not be without mine...
From one technological problem to another! OH bought me a Kindle for my birthday this summer and paid some money into an account to cover the cost of some books (lovely of him, as I read more or less permanently) BUT he bought it from Amazon UK with a UK card.......can I activate it? the short answer is no (there are a lot of mild expletives in between). To be honest, it is sitting there and I am resigned to leaving it there until we get back to UK (by Easter we hope) and then it should be OK, but if, a big if, anyone has a simple solution we would love to know. It won't work from a French address, simple as that.
Be aware that there are similar devices made by other manufacturers such as Kobo. They have the advantage that you can get library books on them because they use a different format. Only the Kindle Fire can read library books. If your local library doesn't have an ebook section you can join a different one - some libraries don't care where you live.
