I've got a bracket to put our 32" TV up into the corner of the kitchen but I'm not sure what height to put it. I assumed near the ceiling but have been told not to put it too high. I've looked at a couple of sites but there didn't seem to be much consensus. Is there a general rule for this?

I think you should put it where you have the room and where it will be comfortable to watch it. i wouldn't have it close to the ceiling...but I wouldn't want a TV in the kitchen!
>>>I assumed near the ceiling

I can only assume that you don't frequent many Chinese takeaways (where it seems to be a rule that there must always be a TV set fixed right by the ceiling). If you did so, you'd know how trying to watch TV there for more than a few minutes (while waiting for your meal) can give you a nasty crick in your neck!

Decide where you'll mainly be watching the TV from (e.g. while standing by a hob or when sitting at a breakfast bar). Stand/sit there and look towards the wall where the TV will be fixed, trying to pretend that it's already there. Stare at the relevant spot for around 30 seconds to see if your neck feels really relaxed when you do so. If it doesn't, allow your head to rise or fall to a more natural position and try again for a further 30 seconds. It shouldn't take long for you to work out where the set should go (remembering, of course, that all electronic devices, such as TVs, need to be kept well away from sources of heat and steam).
My relative has his tv above the fireplace (no usable fire!) and it is extremely uncomfortable watching the tv from his lowish sofa.

Centre of the screen at eye level is best.

As hc's final para says but they might be able to tilt downwards if too high.

It's a kitchen/dining so the TV will be 18ft away from any heat or water source. Basically what you're saying Buen is to go with what feels comfortable rather than following a specific rule.

Hc,when you say eye level I take you mean eye level when seated.

Been round a friend who has his wallmounted....hate it! I watched them watching and surprised they never got a sore neck as I did after only a few minutes.

Go and sit where you'll be watching it, sit comfortably how you would when you are chilling and look towards where the TV will be, check where your natural gaze falls... and mount the TV there!

fender: you have a sofa in the kitchen?
Surely it should always be eye height ? That's where H&S like the PC monitors to be.
I've got a sofa in my kitchen-diner - I would hate to have a TV about natural eye level when I am sitting down.
Just measured ours a 42" and its 54" from the floor to the center of the screen and it's just right for us.The guy who mounted it for us did what chuck suggests, sat us down where we normally sit and worked from there.

We've got a similar set in the Kitchen/diner, it's above a long length of worktop, and is set just high enough that neither of us bump our heads if we use the w/top underneath it.

sorry, meant to add it was near the ceiling, but was uncomfortable to watch so we moved it.

See I always thought that the reason for the bracket was to put it higher up than a stand would give you. In the end I put the top of the TV at approx 5 foot which seems to be fine. Thanks for all the responses and suggestions.
