Can anyone please tell me why the battery discharges overnight when the phone is not being used?

On my Google Nexus phone I turn location, bluetooth and wi-fi off when I am in bed. It makes quite a difference for me.
Make sure any apps you were running, any notifications, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are off.
Also have you got the screen saver enabled or ist sitting there with the screen on all the time?
If it's on it will use power.

If you have things set to update when necessary it will use more.

I have also found a great many things running in the background, some of which are apps that have not been used, so I've become suspicious of late.

But the short answer is that if it is on it'll need power.
//is not being used// Do you mean the phone is completely switched off?

If, instead the 'phone whilst not being actively used is just allowed to go into standby mode then the battery is still being used.
Then there is bluetooth, GPS etc.
