What is the name of the lead which connects the MP 3 player to the computer so I can download songs.

MP3 players in our home connect direct into USB port, the end cap pulls off them exposing a connection that plugs directly into USB slot on computer.

Mine works like yours, via a cable. It's called a USB cable. You should be able to get one easily enough.

most are usb yes, although there's nothing stopping them being firewire either.
