This spyware and adware company has identified 102 instances of spyware on my PC and are now asking for $29.95 to rectify. What's my alternative? Could this be a scam? My PC has been throwing up loads of error reports recently...following children's use of the computer.

Personally I would leave it and download free software to do the same job - Lavasoft ad-aware is very goodhttp://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

You could also do a search for Spybot search & Destroy, these do the same thing at no charge.

If you are running Windows XP, visit www.microsoft.com and download microsoft antispyware and use that.

You have to be running a genuine licensed version of XP to download it.

Does not run on Windows 95/98 or ME.

BTW Birchy are/were you a member of CWL?

Everything is freeware and works well. Personally I run Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, Spybot S&D and Lavasoft Ad-Aware. I also use Sygate firewall, AVG free edition and WinPatrol. See these links for details.

Hope this helps.

Scam!

All the above advice is good, but if you have the same problem as a computer that I recently had to "clean up" it may be quite hard to remove. (I had to do a lot of registry key deletion). What company is offering you this "bargain" and has the offer replaced your standard wallpaper?

Doh! Should have read the Q thoroughly - don't think it was Spyspotter on the computer mentioned above!
