i think i pressed f2 on start up
got a blue square
asking for password.
would that be a bios password area

Quite possibly but simply shutting the laptop down (by removing the power lead and taking the battery out) ought to clear the problem. When you restore power to it I'd expect it to boot normally.
If it actually is a BIOS problem I know of no way to fix it that doesn't involve getting inside the computer and, while I'll happily open up a desktop, I'd rather leave finding a way inside a laptop to the professionals. Sorry!

Well at least we now know for certain that it's a BIOS password screen.
If F2 toggled it on it might also toggle it off.
Also try pressing Esc, as that's often how you get out of a BIOS screen.
Or try pressing Enter to see if there's actually no password set on the BIOS anyway. If so, you'll probably get into the BIOS and there will be an instruction on the screen telling you which key to press to exit it.
