is there any FREE download on the internet which would allow me to play dvd's on my laptop?

If your laptop has a DVD drive then there are loads, including Windows Media Player.

I have a similar problem. Unfortunately, Windows Media Player does not come with it's own DVD codec, so it cannot on it's own play DVD movies.
