i have a PC running XP but it is not a registered copy to me.  i had the product key and its installed but its not 'mine' so to speak.  Anyway i need to install SP2 but its not letting me.

Will it not let me if i am not the registered owner of XP

I would recommend going out and buying XP, if you don't own it yourself.

People shouldn't be encouraging others to get involved in software piracy.

I recommend that you go and purchase a legitimate copy.

I'd also advocate going out & getting yourself a copy, it's cheap enough and you can keep it all patched up & sweet with SP2 and free update downloads. If you look for an OEM version, you can get them for around �59 for XP Home and �99 for XP Pro. Try Novatech or TSG Systems or visit a local Computer Fair.
