A family member expressed surprise that I addressed my in-laws by name and didn't call them Mother/Father, Mum/Dad or whatever.
I personally find it a little odd to refer to my husbands parents in this way and have always been bemused when I have encountered on TV or in real life.
Do many of you call your in-laws Mum or am I the odd one out?
I address them by their first name. It wouldn't feel natural to call them by anything else. MrAC calls my mother 'mum' or 'mummy' just to annoy her (it works), as they are only a few years apart in age and knew each other as kids.
I do know someone who used to do it though and it make the conversations impossible between her and her partner. She'd call his mum, mum and her own mum, mum. He did the same. So when he'd say I'm going to go and see mum she'd get confused as to who's mum he was going to see. Especially when he'd say "I'm going to go and see my mum" and then go and see her mum.
Bearing in mind that on marriage a woman traditionally adopts the rank and style of her husband, you should address your in-laws as your husband would do. The late Queen Mother always addressed Queen Mary as 'Mamma', even though they were related solely by marriage.
Ive never called any of my ex's parents mum or dad, (because they weren't my mum or dad) I did however call the last mrs nailits father a few choice words other than his name.
