If you open the photo in Windows Photo Viewer you will see a pair of curved arrows at the bottom of the screen. Click either of these and the picture will rotate 90 deg, click again and it will have inverted. When you leave Photo Viewer it will save it the right way up.

OK I really am thick here, where will I find Windows Photo Viewer?
Hover over the picture, right click, drop down menu appears, 'open with' choose windows photo viewer.
If you have Windows 7 it will be the default photo viewer. Double-click on the file containing the photo and Windows Photo Viewer should start and display the photo.
I've been assuming that your friend has sent a file containing just the photo (a jpeg file, or similar). If that's not true it may be more complicated.
Incidentally, how do you know the picture is upside-down - you must have displayed it somehow. How did you do that?

O-er I don't get 'open with' when I right click.
Then double click as BHG has suggested.
When you right-click you get the option to "rotate clockwise" (I've just discovered). Do that twice.
You would need to hover over the unopened picture file when seen in Windows Explorer, not when it is already opened and you are looking at it. Just a thought.
Right click onto picture and save to your picture folder. Click open the folder, locate the image, right click onto it and from the drop-down menu you can select 'rotate clockwise (or counter clockwise) to correct it, From there you can copy to wherever you wish.(documents, e/mails, print etc)

It is very useful for us to know, for the future, how folk finally resolve their problems from the advice which is offered to them by AB Techies, who sometimes have differing opinions.

When I went into my folder of pictures, I right clicked my mouse on the image I wanted to rotate and one of the options that came up was rotate, so that's what I did, job done!
