where do I find symbols on a qwerty when typing here..ie not adding to a word document..other than the ones on keys already ...windows 8.1 if that helps...

The way i find easiest is to find what you want in pages such as these

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Unicode/List_of_useful_symbols#Miscellaneous_Symbols.2C_Miscellaneous_Symbols_and_Pictographs_Blocks

and then highlight what you want, followed by cut-and-paste (Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V)

To get character map:

Right click on the Windows icon bottom left, click 'run'. Type
charmap
in the box and it will open. You can, of course, pin this to your task bar if you want quick access.
