Hi whenever I play a dvd on my dvd player in my bedroom connected to the TV I get a whole line of white things like this ------------ along the top of the screen there are so many options available on the dvd remote control I just dont know which one to press. The dvd is a sony dvp sr170. Many thanks

You appear to be trying to change the wrong end of the system, Gordie. The white lines that you're seeing are always generated by DVD players (because they hold information, such as subtitling options, within them). However you don't normally see them because your TV set blocks them out. So you need to go into your TV's settings and work through the available display modes (e.g. '16:9', etc) to see which one is compatible with your DVD player's output.
