I was able to get rid of popups here but since I am on a new virus thingmajig I don't want to disturb anything.

Anybody tell me to get rid of pop ups - I think my browser is Internet Explorer. I know I can google but as I say one thing at a time. Ta

To switch off pop ups in IE.

Click on the cogwheel at top right, select Internet Settings from the dropdown list. From the next window choose the Privacy tab, put a tick in the 'Turn on Pop-up Blocker then click Apply and then OK

alice altho i usually connect to answerbank every morning - just looked and I am google chrome - is that any help

I am surprised that you Do Not have a cogwheel on the top Right Hand Side of your opening Search page, because it is my guess that, unless you have downloaded another Browser, you are operating on Internet Explorer. Nevertheless, do you have a 'Help' box at the top left of of your screen.? If so, click it and it should reveal what Browser you have. Then post again in this thread and say what you have discovered.

Copy and paste from Chrome help


1) In the top-right corner of the browser window, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu.
2) Select Settings.
3)Click Show advanced settings.
4)Under "Privacy," click the Content settings button.
5)Under "Pop-ups," select Do not allow any site to show pop-ups (recommended).

Chrome menu looks like 3 small grey horizontal bars

I don't use Chrome so that's all I can offer you.

display progress on ongoing downloads

open menu (which leads to history etc) that's the lot

Well I really would like to give you Best Answer to all of yous for your time and patience - I'll get there myself as I done it before. Hans I have been on Chrome for years - When I got the 8.1 I was supposed to use the APPS but reverted back to old Chrome which I was familiar with.

So it's not Chrome or IE then is it!

Click on Open Menu/Options/Content, put tick into box for Block pop-up Windows. Close the tab

I don't like google chrome, but it is on this pc & gives the following info for turning on pop-up blocker:
