My mouse pointer will only go up or down, but if I shield it with my other hand it operates normally as soon as I remove my hand it reverts to going up and down, any ideas to overcome this problem.

If it is the basic roller ball type surely it can't be affect by shielding it with your other hand?  I would be very interested if someone could prove me wrong though.  Have you removed the ball and given the rollers a good clean to remove any built up dirt?

Many years ago I had this exact problem. It was caused by external light 'leaking' inside the case and confusing the LED and receiver setup used to track the movement of the ball.

The quickfix I employed involved opening up the case and shielding the offending LED/receiver with a small piece of thick paper to ensure no external light would interfere with its operation.

Kempie have had a close look at the mouse from the outside cannot see where any light could get in,led is that correct? I wouldnt have thought there would be one in there.

Kerplunk.definitely as I say.

Dont want to dissect the mouse just yet,let you know.

Here is a view inside a ball mouse.

In my case the light was coming in through the gaps around the mouse buttons.

Kempie,thanks for that informative information.

I have pulled it apart and had a look cleaned out the fluff you cannot normally get at and noticed the PEC had slighty disloged, pushed back in position but still had a problem noticed the photo-led not properly aligned with the wheel jiggled with it until ok thanks for your help.
