You will find that almost all budget printers will perform adequately for the average domestic user.

The major variable on which you should base your decision is the cost of replacement ink cartridges, which vary considerably.

If you are not a standard occasional domestic user, then you should look at a more heavy-duty durable machine suited to frequent large-scale printing jobs.

Buying the cheapest printers can often be a 'false economy'. That's because they put all of the colours into one cartridge which (even if you use 'compatible' inks) can cost a fortune to replace. It's usually best to pay slightly more for a printer which uses separate (cheap-to-replace) cartridges.

One printer I definitely would NOT recommend is the Canon Pixma iP7250.
Printing a simple document takes nearly 3 minutes for the first page, because it spends around 2.5 minutes "preparing to print".

You haven't really defined "budget" but I bought a HP ENVY 5530, from Tesco in March, and have been very pleased with it. I paid £59 but Tesco now has it at £79. PC World also sells this one, but at £59 ::::

I recently posted a similar question and followed Buenchico's advice to buy the Canon Pixma MG6450. I am very pleased with it - thanks Buenchico !! - £79.99 from PC World.

thanks for the replies. The number of printers on the market is baffling. I am looking at the HP Photosmart 5520 at Argos. it has four cartridges. prints black 11ppm, colour at 8ppm. price £50. Cartridges are a lot cheaper than my previous Epsom.

I am a Canon fan got my wireless print scan copier 3 years ago and never had a problem or slow printing. Cheap genuine inks to. One to avoid Lexmark cheap printers very expensive inks.

The kodak scanner and printer (Aio?) was a total flop with very expensive replacement cartridges and very annoying proprietary software. I've been using a simple epson for a few years, reasonably robust but still has its moments. I hate printers with a passion.

I've got a Photosmart 5510 and its been good for the two and a half years with me. I would though, recommend getting HP cartridges and not reconditioned as I have bought these twice and found them not to print for some reason. Otherwise it's good - prints, copys, scans, wireless too, works with IPad and Samsung phone
