Help please. I will state at the start that I am clueless re technical terms, so please bear with me and I will try to describe the problem in the best way I know how.

My screen with the icons down the left, + wallpaper on..(Viggo Mortensen, extremely attractive), has shrunk...there are black margins a couple of inches wide to either side of him.

HP 15-g 094sa laptop (purple)
Windows 8.1
Google Chrome

I'm sure I've missed out some vital info, but no doubt one of the lovely (as most of you are) techy guys ( and gals) will ask me for any details I've omitted.

Many thanks for reading,
Baths

First, have you tried turning the computer off and then back on again?

I have indeed gromit,...in fact that was when it shrank. I have also run a Malwarebytes scan,...but not an Avast one yet.
This may or may not work, because I haven't a clue on W8.1

Right click on an empty space on your desktop and choose 'personalize'.

In the next window click on 'Desktop Background' and find your picture and choose the option to 'Fill' then click apply and ok.
This should fix it. WARNING: Make a note of the current settings before you change anything!

W8.1, not XP, Gromit

Hi hc.
I tried that, but when I right-clicked, I didn't get Properties...the closest option I saw was "screen resolution" so I clicked on that, + there was a "screen resolution* which I clicked on, + it said 1366 X 78 recommended. I clicked on that, + there was a vertical slider, but it was right at the top, on "high".

....sadly, Viggo still has...:( I'm beginning to wonder now if it's always been this way......I'm pretty sure it hasn't, but ya know how you start to doubt yourself?............

So your back to fullscreen with the BeeGees?

The screen resolution of 1366 x 768 was correct by the way.
Question Author
Yes Slack, it was full-screen with The BeeGees,...but I prefer Viggo at the moment ;)
Like I said,..I'm beginning to think it maybe always was that way with Viggo pic......;)

I'm all thunked out. I'd stick with the BeeGees.
Question Author
Lol @ hc! Thanks anyway.

@ Slack....as if I haven't seen those before, lol!! But thanks, I will try + find one a better size ;)

Just thought when you re-applied Viggo did you get an option to 'Fill'? Should be somewhere there.
have you tried the Stretch option instead of Fit when you go to Personalise > Desktop Background... ?
Like others here, my first thought was that your screen resolution was incorrectly set but 1366 x 768 is correct.

So it might well be a driver problem. Go here and click on 'Check now' to see if HP can spot any missing drivers:

if you can move the icons onto the black margins then it will almost certainly be just the display option for the pic
